Andover - Mohawk Tile & Stone is raising funds on behalf of N.J. State Police Officer Brian Malast, who was seriously injured in a line-of-duty motor vehicle accident on Oct. 19. Malast is the nephew of Sheryl Kelly, proprietor of Mohawk Tile & Stone. Malast was in the process of responding to a suspicious person complaint in the Fort Dix area when the accident occurred. “Many lives were dramatically changed that horrible day, when Brian suffered major injuries as a result of the accident,” said Kelly. Malast is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange. “He is progressing and his spirits are good,” said Kelly. “We do not know when he will be released from the institution, however, we are making plans for that eventual occurrence. “Significant construction must take place at my brother’s residence to accommodate my nephew’s needs,” she added. Kelly said a committee has been formed to help the family obtain the necessary funds, and a benefit baseball game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, June 9, at the Blue Claws Stadium in Lakewood. The “Going to Bat for Brian” event will feature the N.J. State Troopers vs. Manchester High School’s Baseball Alumni. Tickets are $10; free for kids 12 and under. Full concessions will be open. Those unable to attend the game are encouraged to make donations. “The support fund has been created to provide for the comforts and needs of Brian in his time of recovery,” said Kelly. “It is only through the support of individuals and groups that will enable the committee to work hand in hand with my family to provide the necessary care for the rough times ahead.” Checks may be made payable to “Going to Bat for Brian, Inc.,” ( a 501©3 charitable organization), and sent to Going to Bat for Brian, c/o Mohawk Tile & Stone, 187 Main St., Route 206S, Andover, NJ 07821. “We truly appreciate your support,” said Kelly. “Please keep Brian in your prayers.”
