West Milford - It’s the hottest ticket in town. Already well known for a concert series that spotlights such music-world luminaries as The Strawbs, Freedy Johnston, Steve Forbert, Patty Larkin, and Aztec Two-Step, West Milford’s Music at the Mission also presents “the best open mic outside the city” on the first Saturday of each month at its intimate coffeehouse-style room on the grounds of the West Milford Presbyterian Church, 1452 Union Valley Road. Now in its fourth season, open mic night has been drawing audiences of well over 125 music fans for lively performances by approximately 25 musicians in each show. Sara Gallmann, the chair of the non-profit organization Music at the Mission and a musician herself, says it took time to grow the open mic night scene. “Early on, there were nights when my husband Matt and I were the only performers,” she notes. Now, word of mouth about the packed houses has spread among the greater performing arts community, and artists are coming not only from West Milford and nearby towns, but also upstate NY and New York City, Connecticut, Philadelphia, and as far away as Canada. The completely volunteer-run organization was created to foster and support the arts through live music performances. Through concerts and community open mics, Music at the Mission provides an opportunity for musicians to perform for live audiences, supporting artists’ needs for expression, increased promotion, and exposure. Doors open for open mic night at 7:30 p.m., and the performances start at 8 p.m. Refreshments are available, including soft drinks, tea, coffee, cheesecake, and cookies.
