Newton - Sussex County Community College will present a free lecture and book signing with Nancy Gerber at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 24, in the College Library. Gerber’s book, Losing a Life: A Daughter’s Memoir of Caregiving, maps the wrenching terrain of caring for an elderly parent. Gerber’s father suffered a massive stroke on the right side of the brain in 1995, leaving him paralyzed. From an active, gregarious man with hobbies and friends, who was working at the time he had the stroke, Gerber’s father became withdrawn, hostile and silent. Gerber holds a doctorate in literatures in English from Rutgers University. She is the author of another book, Portrait of the Mother-Artist: Class and Creativity in Contemporary American Fiction in addition to Losing a Life: A Daughter’s Memoir of Caregiving, she teaches in the English and women’s studies departments at Rutgers University-Newark. Recently she led a series of workshops on writing and caregiving.
