Newton - More than 600 walkers representing local corporations, families, schools, and other organizations are expected to turn out for the Northern New Jersey and Rockland County Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation annual Walk to Cure Diabetes, at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, at Sussex Community College. The chapter’s goal is to raise more than $1,000,000 for research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications. “It’s great to be working together with JDRF on such an important goal, curing a disease that kills one American every three minutes. Also, recent statistics reveal that health care expenditures surrounding diabetes cost our nation more than $130 billion,” said William Curcio of Eastern Propane, the Corporate Recruitment Chair for the Walk. “Recent statistics reveal that health care expenditures surrounding diabetes cost our nation more than $130 billion. That’s why we are committed to raising money for cutting-edge research. By working together, we can make a difference,” he said. Entire families from kids to grandparents are participating in the Walk to Cure Diabetes - even if they are not among the 14 million Americans with a personal connection to type one diabetes. The walk is a 5K around the scenic Sussex Community College campus. On-site registration begins at 9 a.m. with the walk starting at 10 a.m. There will also be entertainment, fun for the kids and plenty of refreshments. Some of the activities include: pony rides, a marching band, face painting and a dance performance by the “Champagne Girls.” “We are immensely appreciative of William Curcio and Eastern Propane’s participation,” said Geoffrey Lewis, Chapter President. “This is corporate citizenship at its best. The commitment of William Curcio and Eastern Propane enables us to accelerate research to find a cure for diabetes. Insulin is life support, not a cure, and research is the only answer for the as many as three million Americans suffering from type one diabetes and its complications.” Actor Kevin Kline is National Chair of JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. Kline has been celebrity advocate for JDRF for the past four years. You can view this year’s walk video featuring Kline by visiting www.walk.jdrf.org. “Those of us who are blessed with good health must do all we can to help support the research community in their search for a cure for juvenile diabetes,” said Kevin Kline. “The daily regimen of finger pricks and injections of insulin, combined with the constant dread of complications, are burdens that no child should have to suffer with.” JDRF Walks are held in more than 200 cities worldwide. Nationally, nearly 500,000 people walked to cure diabetes last year. Collectively, the JDRF Walks raised over $80 million last year, and are expected to raise $86 million this year for diabetes research.
