Scarecrow competition, ghost stories and crafts at Wallisch Homestead

| 13 Oct 2014 | 03:36

The Friends of Wallisch are sponsoring its first major community art event and they want your submissions - homemade scarecrows and costumes.

Classic, funny, scary, silly, friendly, menacing, or just plain strange - any way you make them, scarecrows are a kind of folk art. Submit your dream (or nightmare) scarecrow, and Friends of Wallisch Homestead will display them all together in the center of the Wallisch Homestead field.

Bring your scarecrow to the Homestead on Saturday, Oct. 25, and the group will set them all up out in the field to keep the crows away. Or make one that day - the group will provide everything you need. Hotdogs, donuts and cider will also be available.

Music will be provided by the “Homestead Stompers” and friends. Ghost stories will be told around a campfire in the center of the giant circle of scarecrows. And prizes will be awarded for the funniest, scariest and most creative scarecrows and costumes.

For each scarecrow you wish to enter or make on site there will be a $10 entry fee as donation to the Restoration Fund.

It all takes place on Saturday, Oct. 25, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Wallisch Homestead, 65 Lincoln Ave. in West Milford.

The Friends of Wallisch Homestead, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the restoration and adaptive reuse of the buildings as an exhibition and learning center as well as environmental stewardship of the land for public enjoyment.
