Newton - Sussex County Community College will sponsor a trip to the N.J. Performing Arts Center on Sun., April 30, for the Children of Uganda’s “Tour of Light 2006” performance. The performance by the award-winning Children of Uganda company of dancers, singers, and musicians will take place at 2 p.m. at the arts center’s Prudential Hall. A bus will leave the E-Building parking lot at the college at 12:30 p.m. on April 30. Tickets are $15 for students, $20 for faculty and staff, and $25 for the community. The ensemble, composed of young Ugandan performers from age four to 18, performs traditional African song and dance, accompanied by African instrumentation and costumes. The troupe tours in an effort to increase awareness about the AIDS epidemic in Africa, and raises funds for Uganda’s more than 1.5 million orphans. Described as “first-rate” and “inspiring” by The New York Times, Children of Uganda has toured the U.S. biennially since 1996. They have appeared at the White House, with David Letterman, at the Grammy Awards, and at numerous corporate and media-sponsored events. The dual crises of civil war and AIDS in Uganda pose a serious threat to Uganda’s rich and varied culture. The Children of Uganda ensemble was originally founded to teach orphaned children the songs, dances, and stories that were in danger of being lost. Tickets can be purchased at the college business office, located at One College Hill Rd. in Newton. For information, call 973-300-2232.
