Newton - Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County will hold its first Scrabble fundraiser from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, at Christ Episcopal Church, located at 62 Main St. in Newton. The competition will consist of teams of three playing against other teams to obtain the highest score. There will be two 30-minute games. Participants are asked to bring their Scrabble games with them to the event if possible. This is not a sanctioned Scrabble tournament. It is strictly for fun and prizes, which will be awarded to the top three teams. Cost to enter is $25 per person. A special discount will be given to Literacy Volunteers tutors and students. Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County promotes increased literacy and fluency in English for adult learners through the use of volunteers and support staff. In Sussex County, 34 percent of adults are at the lowest literacy levels. Among the growing immigrant population, around 3,000 residents feel isolated or limited by language communication problems. Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County subsists through generous contributions from individuals and organizations. The Scrabble fundraiser not only seeks to garner funds for the organization, but is also seen as a team building method for corporations, newspapers, libraries, and church and civic organizations who participate.
