Sculpture garden tour at SCCC

Newton - Sculptor Don Gerola will lead a sculpture garden walking tour at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, on the campus of Sussex County Community College, located at One College Hill Rd. in Newton. Gerola created all the sculptures on the campus. Participants in the walking tour will meet outside the Sussex Bank Theater at the college. Gerola studied physics at the University of Dayton, Ohio. He says that 1974 was a pivotal year in opening the “doorway” to the artistic path that became his life commitment. After several years creating graphic “super murals,” Gerola pioneered a signature “sand fresco” technique on canvas and board. In 1980 he completed a computer-controlled water fountain, with laser beams and jets of flaming gas. He also created two 25 foot mobiles that were the centerpiece of the Washington, D.C., and N.Y. International Art Expos. He still plans to fabricate “monumental structures” that will “probe the laws of gravity.” There is no charge to join the walking tour. Rain date is Wednesday, May 10, at 6 p.m. For information, call 973-300-2120.
