Warwick — This summer, settle down under the stars and enjoy some fine wine, gourmet food, and a hearty serving of Shakespearean theatre, with “Romeo & Juliet” at Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery. The Illustrious Theatre Company’s production will run on weekends from July 14 to 30, with show times at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. The outdoor stage at the winery offers a mystical atmosphere, in an amphitheater surrounded by pear and apple trees. Previous productions have been acclaimed not only for the quality of the performances, costumes, design and music, but also for the setting. “Romeo & Juliet” will be directed by the company’s artistic director, Mary Clifford, and performed by a cast of 30 actors, including Gary Ciuffetelli as Romeo and Virginia Bosch as Juliet. Assistants include: choreographer Carol Chave of New York City, who is also designing and building the costumes; set designer JoAnn McNicholas; fight choreographer Drew Leary of New York City; Gene Arnold of A & A Lighting; and Steinwand Sound Company. The four year old company has had a busy indoor season so far, highlighted by the surprise attendance of author and playwright Ira Levin at the production of his play “Veronica’s Room.” The event was topped by Levin’s attendance at the company’s fundraising gala, at which he proclaimed that their production of “Veronica’s Room” was the best he had ever seen. Tickets are $12 and $10 (for students and seniors) in advance, or $17 and $13 at the gate. Children under 11 are admitted free. Tickets are not dated and good for any one performance. They may be purchased at The Bookstore at 20 Main St. in Warwick, or at Healthy Thymes Market on Route 94 in Vernon, or by calling 258-4858. Bring-your-own seating begins an hour before curtain. Food and beverages are available from a bistro-style menu. The winery is located at 114 Little York Road in Warwick. For directions, visit www.wvwinery.com. For a donation of $100 to $199, patrons receive two tickets to the summer’s production, a 10 percent discount card for all winery products, free admission to the Bob Dylan Festival and Harvest Moon Festival, early alerts for ticket sales, and acknowledgement in all playbills.
