Shakespeare's ‘All's Well That Ends Well' at Long Pond Ironworks

West Milford — Friends of Long Pond Ironworks present the fourth annual Shakespeare in the State Park festival at Long Pond Ironworks State Park in West Milford on Saturday, August 12 at 4 p.m. In an open-air setting on the lawn in front of the historic Stone Double House, the Hudson Shakespeare Company will perform “All’s Well that Ends Well.” Written between 1603 and 1604, “All’s Well That Ends Well” turns the gender tables — instead of a young man pursuing a well-to-do girl, the opportunistic and crafty suitor in this Shakespeare comedy is Helena, the daughter of recently deceased French court physician, who pursues the well-born Bertram, Count of Rossillion. Helena uses her family’s secrets to cure the ailing King of France to gain Bertram’s hand in marriage. But he rejects her by setting impossible conditions she must meet for him to acknowledge her as his wife. Although the play follows the formula of a romantic comedy, with a happy ending that ties loose ends together, “All’s Well That Ends Well” might be known today as black comedy that puts a somewhat perverse twist on the typically feel-good genre. Admission is free and all ages are welcome. The gates will open at 4 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to come early and enjoy the park’s outdoor setting. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and a picnic dinner. (No alcoholic beverages are permitted in the State Park.) The rain date is Sunday, August 13. This project is funded, in part, by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College, and made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts. The Friends of Long Pond Ironworks, Inc., is a nonprofit (501[c][3]) volunteer organization working in cooperation with the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry to preserve, restore, and interpret the Long Pond Ironworks historic district.
