Pompton lakes — Having presented musicals, comedies and dramas, now Smiling Rhino Theatre will present the suspense thriller, “Night Watch,” by Lucille Fletcher. An outstanding Broadway success, this ingeniously devised play builds steadily in menace and suspense until the final breath-stopping moment of its unexpected ending. Unable to sleep, Elaine Wheeler, an unstable heiress, paces the living room of her Manhattan townhouse, troubled by unsettling memories and vague fears. Her husband tries to comfort her, but when he steps away momentarily Elaine screams as she sees the body of a dead man in the window across the way. The police are called, but find nothing. Elaine’s terror grows when she sees another body, a woman’s, but by now the skeptical police ignore her frantic pleas. From this point on, the plot moves quickly and grippingly as those involved - a psychiatrist, Elaineâ’s houseguest, the sinister man who lives next door and the nosy maid - all contribute to the deepening suspense and mystery of this superior quick moving and cleverly constructed thriller, which is a first-class example of the genre.
