Sparta - Four students from Sparta High School have been chosen to perform with the N.Y. Performers’ Project in the company’s first N.J. appearance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at The Parish House Theater in West Orange. The performance, part of the “Theater Under the Stars” special event series, features three world premieres and several N.J. premieres by Kelsea-Janenne Fleisher, the company’s award winning choreographer. Sparta High School students Mary Ann Lucas, Sarah Parker, Megan Smith and Kira Stanley were selected to apprentice with the N.Y. Performers’ Project and will be performing in two new works created especially for them. They will also appear with the company in “Jazz Suite,” accompanied by world renowned jazz musician and composer Frank Pisani. The four Sparta students attend the Sussex Dance Academy (formerly known as Dance by Kempson). They were chosen for their technical merit and emotional maturity to fulfill the company’s mission of providing opportunities for the next generation of dance artists. By bringing together talented students with professional dancers, both have the opportunity to grow and expand their performance experience. Fleisher was selected as a member of her first professional dance company at age 13, and she feels it is important to be able to provide that opportunity for others. N.Y. Performers’ Project is known for its exuberant repertory and diverse choreography. Most recently the group performed in Cyprus for the World Dance Congress, and appeared in a dance program on Cyprus television. The company fuses styles from ballet and modern to aerial, circus and jazz. Their performances have been characterized as “technically proficient, emotionally engaged, powerful and heartwarming.” Tickets for the Feb. 4 N.J. performance are $20 adults, $18 seniors, and $15 students. The Parish House Theater is located at 662 Eagle Rock Ave., at the corner of Pleasant Valley Way, in West Orange. For ticket information, call 973-325-0795.
