Sparta —Sharon McKenna, daughter of Mike McKenna, former Sparta mayor, and Barbara McKenna, Sparta teacher, has written a children’s book, “Good Morning Sunshine, a Grandpa Story.” Siblings Kevin (All Seasons Window Cleaning/Skyhawk Management Company), Katie (Miss Sparta, 1995) and Mike (All State champion lacrosse), along with Sharon, lived with their parents on Stanhope Road. McKenna has a BFA in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and her MFA in graphic design, from the Rochester Institute of Technology. The family has now moved to various places on the eastern half of the country. She was discovered while working at Savannah College of Art and Design, when she entered her children’s book into a contest for new authors just about a year ago. “Good Morning Sunshine, a Grandpa Story” is about a little girl (her sister Katie) who has such a hard time with “grumblies.” Katie’s grandpa is always there with a positive and humorous twist on Katie’s struggles. He helps Katie cope with the stresses that little people experience as they try to find balance in their lives. His gentleness and humor are a consistent theme throughout the book and serve to help the readers, both children and adults, realize that this role modeling by grandpa is an example of how adults can help children learn the tools of coping that are an important part of growing up. McKenna has already completed her next children’s book, which features Katie experiencing a day with grandma. McKenna’s book can be ordered at amazon.com or purchased in bookstores, including Sparta Book Store.
