Sparta resident issues new release

Sparta -Drummer Karl Latham’s second solo release will be on sale June 12. On Saturday June 8 and Sunday, June 9, Bula-B Lounge in Newton will sponsor the release party for “Resonance,” a DorpzoneJazz Records release. The Sparta musician performs in most genres. He has performed with jazz masters Claudio Roditi, John Lee, Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis and Clark Terry, modern jazz masters Mark Egan, Michal Urbaniak and Don Braden, rockers Johnny and Edgar Winter and European jazz artists Wolfgang Lackerschmid, Hendrik Meurkens and Johannes Mössinger. “Resonance”, is a jazz/rock/jam sonic experience based on Latham’s diverse experience. It features original compositions and arrangements. It features a hard-grooving Afro 6/8 arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s classic “Higher Ground,” two Jimi Hendrix favorites: Manic Depression” and a rocking jazz Cha Cha arrangement of “Spanish Castle Magic.” Other tracks include a drum and bass arrangement of Thelonius Monk’s “Bemsha Swing” and a samba version of Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise”. At the release party, Latham will be joined by Kermit Driscoll, John Hart and Vinnie Cutro. Karl’s other current projects include the group Big Fun(k!), a collective jazz/funk group with top jazz saxophonist Don Braden, keyboardist Nick Rolfe and bassist Gary Foote. They will perform June 29 along with the Sparta HS Jazz Band as the season opener for the Sparta Summer Concerts. Karl’s other notable work in progress is a trio Unit One featuring bassist Mark Egan. Latham is an adjunct facutly member at County College of Morris and Passaic County College and shot a pilot in the role of house band member for a new reality/comedy show with Jon Lovitz and Kendra Wilkinson for possible future syndication. Latham is co-chair of the Sparta Cultural Affairs Committee.
