Vernon - The Highland Stage will end its two weekend-run of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” its annual Youth Theatre production, with a strike of the set on Monday, Aug. 14, followed by a workshop on colleges, careers and related issues for students interested in pursuing acting, musical theatre, or technical theatre after high school. The workshop is being offered to the Youth Theatre students and to all interested area students and parents free of charge by Executive Producer Dr. William Donald. The motivation for the workshop is the curiosity of many students, coupled with concerns about intelligent choices for degree programs, colleges, proprietary schools, unions, agents, managers, the important first year of college, and critical choices for life after college. The Highland Stage youth troupe is composed of students from the region, grades 5-12 and slightly beyond. Highly talented and motivated, these students and others in the region need guidance if they intend to pursue further training for a potential career. Donald holds both a BFA and an MA in theatre, as well as the Ph.D. in Arts Education. He has been a leader in New Jersey arts education, affecting state decisions on arts standards and arts graduation requirements. An Equity stage manager, he had stints stage managing professional shows at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, and at the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre in New York while taking a sabbatical from his 30 years of teaching and directing high school theatre. Retiring in 2004 from his position as K-12 Visual and Performing Arts Supervisor for the Teaneck Schools, Donald has three grown daughters who are active in various areas of the profession. The workshop will be at 4 p.m. at Holy Counselor Lutheran Church on Sandhill Road in Vernon on Monday, Aug. 14. For information, call 973-875-3039.
