Township offers spring programs

    WEST MILFORD — The West Milford Department of Community Services and Recreation is offering spring programs for children, everything from drama and dancing, to chess and Karate. Below is a list of the programs.

    To find out more about the programs, go to www.westmilford. org, or call the Recreation Office at Hillcrest Community Center at 973-728-2860. To register, either print the forms from the Web site after clicking on Forms and Documents, or go to the Recreation Office for the forms. The main office hours, when personnel are available to help, are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Hillcrest Community Center is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

    Registration forms can be completed and left with checks attached (no cash) in the Community Services and Recreation box located in the monitor's office. All classes are held at Hillcrest Community Center unless otherwise noted. Non-residents of West Milford add $10 to cost of any program. Registration is currently on-going.

    Junior Dance Team Clinics And Tryouts

    Program Code: DanceClinic 1166 For children entering grades 5 through 8

    This team is about having a passion for dance and offers dancers, entering grades 5 through 8 next fall, an opportunity to develop their skills as a competitive team. Clinics will be held May 23 and 24, 6 to 8 p.m. Try outs will be on May 30th starting at 6 p.m.

    Registration is required. Cost for clinics and tryouts: $10

    Rising Stars Acting Program Program Code: Acting 1155;2

    For children grades 3 to 6 This program is designed to help the child grow as a performer, as well as an individual. It will introduce your child to the theatre by teaching them through storytelling and games how to develop a character for performing. It will help the child learn the basics of the theater, to develop a character and make the character grow. Mondays, April 16 through June 11 (no class May 28); 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

    Drama classes for children in preschool and kindergarten

    This program will stimulate children's imaginations and explore real and imaginary worlds. Each week, children will create a costume piece, prop or mask associated with that week’s theme. Parents are invited at the end of class for a short presentation. Ages 3 1/2 through 5. Fridays, April 20 through May 25; 9:45 to 10:30 a.m.

    Piano I: For children in grades 1 through 4

    This class will start with reading by the numbers and playing with one hand first and then expand to both hands. Short and easy tunes will be introduced to make it possible for the young ones to play and feel the rhythm from the very beginning. Keyboards will be provided for use at the lesson. Wednesdays, April 18 through June 6, 4:30 to 5:15 p.m.

    Cost: $120 Piano II: For children in grades 5 through 8

    Program Code: Piano2: 1159;2 The piano is an ideal first instrument for children to learn. This course will guide the student step by step through basic note reading and playing skills with both hands, by selecting familiar music to provide an enjoyable learning experience. Keyboards will be provided for use at the lesson. Wednesdays, April 18 through June 6. 5:15 to 6 p.m.

    For children in grades 1 through 8

    Learning the violin will help develop the child's intellect, memory reaction and coordination. In beginner violin, students will learn basic fingerings and how to read music notes. By the end of the course, students should be able to pluck or bow a few simple songs, as well as have a greater appreciation of the beauty of the violin.

    Intermediate lessons will expand on what was learned in the previous sessions. Free violin rentals. Thursdays, April 19 through June 7.

    No experience necessary. This will be a fun, informative and interactive class. Students will learn all the basics for guitar including note reading, melody, chords, songs and much more!     Clay is a marvelous material to work with and pottery is a craft that involves total hands on experience. Participants will have fun designing, decorating, and coloring their own handmade pieces. Wednesday, May 2, 4:30 to 6 p.m.

    The US Sports Institute, which brings the very popular Multi-Sport Camp, also offers the Sport Squirts program as a great way to introduce children ages 3 to 5 to a variety of sports such as soccer, T-ball, basketball and hockey, all taking place in a safe, structured environment to ensure learning. All activities promote hand-eye coordination, movement and balance, and most importantly, fun! Mondays, April 16 through June 4 (no class May 28); 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Parents must remain at program.

    For children ages 3 to 5 years old

    The US Sports Institute is offering a beginner soccer program for children 3 to 5 years old. Soccer Squirts learn the fundamentals of soccer through a program of activities and fun based games designed to stimulate a child’s imagination and develop motor skills. All activities promote hand-eye coordination, movement, balance and most importantly, fun! Mondays, April 16 through June 4 (no class May 28), 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Parents must remain at program.

    For students in grades 7 through 12 and adults

    This program is designed to provide beginner and intermediate level fencers with the opportunity to learn and to improve basic fencing skills. Experienced instructors will provide guidance in fundamental areas such as agility training, overall conditioning, footwork skill/drill and blade work. Wednesday evenings, 6 to 8 p.m.; April 25 to June 6 at Macopin School. West Milford residents only.

    For students in grades 1 through 3

    Students will study the styles and techniques of art inspired by American Artists. In this class students will recreate artwork using mediums such as paint, pastel, charcoal and collage. Materials will be provided. Thursdays, April 19 through May 10. 5 to 6 p.m.

    In this class, both you and your baby will be introduced to basic sign language that relates to everyday words. Tuesdays, April 17 through May 8. 9 to 9:45 a.m.

    Music program for newborns to age 5 with caregiver

    This program will expose your child to a variety of music, creative movement, singing, imagination and circle time with the use of instruments and fun. Wednesdays, April 18 through June 6 from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m.

    Children will learn the application of glazing ceramics from a large selection of casted pieces using your choice of colors to enhance your piece. Classes are run on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 18 and 25, May 9 and 16, June 6 and 13;

    Utilize cooking in a safe and fun environment. Learn to measure and use cooking utensils. Make simple dishes, get hands on experience and taste your results! Thursdays, May 3, 10, 17 and 24; 4:30 to 6 p.m.

    Junior Jazzercise is a perfect program to get kids active and learn the importance of exercise and health. The program combines fun, easy to follow dance moves to popular music, fitness games, and light strength training. The non-competitive atmosphere is the perfect setting to introduce your child to fitness. No dance experience is required.

    Classes for kids ages 3 to 6 are Wednesdays, April 18 through June 20, 1 to 2 p.m.

    Classes for kids ages 7 to 12 are Thursdays, April 19 through June 21, 4 to 5 p.m.

    Bring the family out for an evening of frog hunting with flashlights. We’ll talk about frogs in our region, listen to their calls, provide a frog guide and then go frog hunting. Limited enrollment, West Milford residents only. Pre-registration is required. Choose one of the following dates: Thursdays, May 24, June 7, 21; 8 p.m. Meet at Westbrook Park pavilion.

    Studies have shown that chess develops critical thinking and problem solving skills and helps with memory retention as well. This six-week program will combine instruction in the game of chess with playing time. Two sessions are being offered: one for relative beginners and one for more experienced players. Players may move from one group to the other as they progress. Accommodations may be made for slightly younger or older players. Beginners: 4 to 5 p.m.; Intermediates: 5 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays, April 17 through May 22.

    For children in grades 2 through 5

    Homework Heroes is a program that will help your child achieve the confidence that they need to be successful in school. The goal is to support students who have difficulty understanding what was taught in the daily lesson and to find the hero in themselves. Children will receive individualized support, but not one-to-one tutoring. Teacher assessments will be made and homework helper suggestions will be given to parents. Some strategies include organization, communication, reading comprehension, note taking, test taking and stress management. Limited class size. Lead by Jill Dunlop, New Jersey certified teacher. Tuesdays, April 17 through June 12, 4 to 5:30 p.m.

    Enrich your child’s kindergarten experience with art. Paint a story, cut and create a paper collage, use clay to form a sculpture,and use pastels to design a self portrait. Materials will be provided. Classes are for students in kindergarten. Thursdays, April 19 through May 10, 4 to 5 p.m.

    Cost: $50 Interactive Storytelling Workshop

    Program Code: Ariana; 1164 For children in grades kindergarten through three

    “Ariana’s Musical Journey.” Join Ariana in her fun, musical journey where she and her friends learn about kindness, respect, responsibility, fairness and honesty. This presentation is creative both musically and visually with three storytellers using the violin, flute, and French horn. During the craft portion each participant will make an instrument to use during the story. Tuesday, April 24 from 4:15 to 5:45.

    For children in grades 1 through 6

    Join American Eagle MMA Black Belt and national martial arts champion James Foody as he leads this martial arts program. This program is designed to enhance self-esteem, self-discipline and safety awareness by incorporating the S.A.V.E. Bully Proof Program. Self-discipline and defense, rather than aggressiveness are promoted. Weekly safety flyers focus on a wide range of topics including strangers, fire safety and more. Thursdays, April 19 through June 21, 5 to 5:45 p.m.
