Vernon - While many people may think of poetry as something for highbrows, it is actually the most versatile and wide-ranging of literary forms, enabling things to be said that cannot be encompassed in prose. Many still think of poetry as being rhymed lines written in meter, but today’s poetry like that of newly published Vernon resident S. Thomas Summers is for everyone. “I focus on things that people see every day but may fail to notice. I just give them a different perspective,” he said. Summers, who is an English teacher at Wayne Hills High School in Wayne, has been writing poetry since he was ten years old and recently entered a poetry competition held by Shadows Ink Publication. He won the competition with a poem called Death settled well and as a prize had a collection of his poems published. “Poets seem to be writing for other poets. I don’t want to confuse readers and I’m not trying to change the world. I’m just trying to share my world,” said Summers. Death settled well is a collection of 37 poems with titles as diverse as Moment at a Jersey Diner, Afternoon Delight and Listening to the Charlie’s Daniel’s Band. Summers dedicated it to his wife, Laura, his step daughter, Reanna, and his son, Garrett. Praise for Summers’ work includes a review by the editor of the Loch Raven Review that reads: “Summers uses crisp language with often brutal honesty and always exquisite clarity to create poetry that cannot fail to leave an impression on his readers.” Death settled well is available locally at Olde Lafayette Book Seller and Annie’s Book Stop in Wantage or can be ordered online from www.shadowpoetry.com
