Newton - A “coffee house” setting will showcase jazz and swing vocalist Vickie Smith as she leads her quartet in a free jazz concert at 10:50 a.m. on Thursday, March 9, in the cafeteria at Sussex County Community College. Smith and her group will honor the ladies of the Swing Era with their tribute show, “Satin Dolls.” The high energy, swingin’ musical journey celebrates the ladies whose multi-talents made them shine throughout the Swing Era and beyond, including Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, and Rosemary Clooney, all of whom made the transition from “chick singers” to well respected and versatile musicians. The Vickie Smith Quartet will perform such favorites as: “Fever,” It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing,” “All of Me,” and, of course, “Satin Doll,” - all with a fresh sound. The community is invited to attend the performance. Refreshments will be available for purchase. For information, call 973-300-2232.
