Join the search to find an odd-looking bird that inhabits the woods and fields of New Jersey on Saturday, April 21, when volunteers from the Friends of the Wallkill River National Wildife Refuge lead a free public walk to witness the courtship flight of the woodcock. The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Refuge Headquarters, 1547 County Route 565, Vernon, and drive a short distance to view the birds performing on the refuge fields. The woodcock appears as the sun sets to perform his spring dance. His body resembles a miniature turkey, as he struts on the ground. His eyes are on opposite sides of his head, his long bill is more than twice as long as his head and he utters a nasal beep at regular intervals. Then, suddenly, this plump ball of feathers is airborne and chirping. If interested in learning more about the woodcock and experience this rite of spring, call Ken Witkowski at 973-208-9808.
