Sparta - The Center for Prevention and Counseling’s Task Force on Women and Addiction will hold its 20th annual conference, titled, “Finding Your Authentic Self” from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, at Lake Mohawk Country Club in Sparta. The goal of the conference is to help empower women to uncover, define and improve their “authentic self.” “Finding Your Authentic Self” is also the title of the keynote presentation by Sister Brunilda Ramos, who has 19 years of experience in the field of addiction, including detox case manger, adolescent counselor and senior counselor. Ramos was instrumental in opening a detox center for Saint James Hospital in Newark. She has also served as a counselor for the Salvation Army adult rehabilitation program for men on parole and probation. Jack Foreaker will present his “12-Step Recovery Puppet Show.” Foreaker has worked in motion pictures, including his performance as a puppeteer in Miss Piggy’s Wedding. He has also done extensive TV work for Public Broadcasting System and has appeared in over 300 productions. Foreaker is not only an entertainer, but he is also a certified alcohol and drug counselor and executive director of Haven House, Inc., an inpatient addictions treatment facility in Maryland. Afternoon workshops include: African Drumming, Dance and Song by Lara Gonzalez and Yael Shacham. Gonzalez and Shacham have been studying and teaching West African drum, dance and song for over a decade. They travel frequently to Guinea to focus on music and dance from a variety of ethnic groups, collaborating with master artists there. Delia Quigley will host “The 10-Step Plan to Optimal Health.” Quigley has been teaching the importance of proper diet and whole foods preparation for over 20 years. She is the author of four books on vegetarian cooking and meditation, and is a certified macrobiotic chef and master yoga instructor. “Allowing Your Dreams to Become Reality” will be hosted by Teresa Mankin. This interactive workshop is intended to help participants tap into their creativity, find their dreams and make them a reality. Individuals will develop a working plan to help make their dreams come true. Mankin is a certified alcohol and drug counselor as well as an interior designer. She has worked in the substance abuse field for 16 years. She designs and produces “Turn of the Century Musical Fashion Shows” to help raise funds for non-profit groups. She and her husband also recently opened the Tapestry Café in Netcong. Cost for the conference is $50 per person, which includes breakfast and a buffet luncheon. Limited scholarships are available.
