Warwick — Orange County has been selected again as the site of the 11th Woodlanders Gathering in late August. Gatherings bring gardeners, crafters and artists of all skill levels together. This year the focus will be on sustainable living, and adapting traditional crafts into contemporary lifestyles. “The agriculture, the artists, and just the plain beauty of the land make it an ideal place to meet at that time of year,” said artist Janet Howard-Fatta, one of the organizers of the event. Woodlanders Gatherings started in Maine in 2000 as a chance for nature-based people to get together and share information and learn new craft skills. The event now draws about 100 people for the weekend. Other gatherings are held each year in Wisconsin, and were held in Hunter for a few years. “It’s like a family picnic,” said artist and author Daniel Mack, organizer and host since the beginning. “Gardeners, farmers, craftspeople - anybody who’s interested in earth-based activities - get together. The information is great, but just being together is the real pleasure. There’s music, food and community.” Over 30 workshops, demonstrations, hikes, and tours will be offered, on subjects ranging from traditional woodworking skills of carving, furniture building, basketry, to living willow fences and trellis-building from branches. There will be a workshop on biodiesel fuel and wood furnaces at the Bruderhof Community on Gibson Hill Road in Chester, and hikes to Lenape Indian sites in the area. At a twilight event, a hundred handmade miniature boats, lit with tea candles, will be floated out on a pond. The gathering will be held at the campgrounds of the Warwick Conference Center, from Friday, August 25, through Sunday, August 27.
