NEWTON Jennie Traill Schaeffer, artist/owner of TraillWorks: Painting and Design Studio in Newton, announces the inclusion of her paintings in two premier juried shows. First Anniversary I was selected for inclusion in the 30th Annual Small Works Exhibition at 80 Washington Square East Galleries in New York City. An opening reception will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, from noon to 4 p.m. Small Works has a reputation for showing both established and undiscovered artists working in dimensions that measure twelve inches or less. Contributing artists have come from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North America. The show continues through March 9. St. Mixer, recently published by the New York Times, will be included in the 21st International Juried Show, Feb. 9 through March 30, at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit. An opening reception is planned for Friday, Feb. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the center’s newly renovated gallery. Laura Hoptman, senior curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, N.Y., selected 126 works of about 1800 entries from Italy, Israel, Germany, Japan, Canada, Sweden, England, New Zealand, Thailand, South Korea, Argentina, Czech Republic, Spain and Mexico. Named “Best New Artist” in 2006 by the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council, Schaeffer is an emerging artist who exhibits in the New York City metro area, with work located in a growing number of private collections including Mountain Creek, Vernon. Her work has earned several awards, notably from Syracuse University, the Somerset Art Association and the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council.She was critically lauded by the Village Voice and recently published in the New York Times. Schaeffer is known for her paintings of appliances and cakes, symbolizing domestic dilemmas, paintings representing Italy and her functional hand-painted tiles inspired by Italy, the Gourmet and Main St.
