Sparta - This weekend, the World Mission Gift Shop, located in the Sparta United Methodist Church on the comer of Route 517 and Sparta Avenue, will be hosting its 2nd Annual Fair Trade Day to help relieve poverty around the world. The shop features gourmet coffees, teas, and chocolates, as well as one-of-a-kind handcrafts, including jewelry, pottery, home furnishings, clothing accessories, and toys, made by artisans from around the world. All merchandise is purchased through fair trade organizations such as Ten Thousand Villages and Serrv International, ensuring fair wages, and no child labor or worker exploitation. Hundreds of new items have arrived in preparation for the event. “We try to touch the lives of people in all corners of the world. Every fair trade purchase helps to relieve poverty by providing an income to artisans and farmers who would otherwise be underemployed or unemployed,” said Nancy VanderVeen, the store’s coordinator. The fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Proceeds from the shop are donated to charitable organizations, with $3500 in donations this past year. Regular store hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., and Thursdays and Fridays from 1 - 4 p.m.
