Youth symphony kicks off new season on Jan. 21

    Warwick — The Skylands Youth Symphony will be launching its new series of performances with the ninth annual Winter Concert on Sunday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Warwick Reformed Church on Maple Avenue. The Yout Symphony performance will include several musical genres, ranging from lighter show music, such as “The Syncopated Clock,” to the more traditional classical piece “Dance of The Tumblers,” by Rimsky-Korsakoff. The Youth Chamber Ensemble performance will encounter the well-known “Canon” by Johann Pachelbel and “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart along with several other powerful orchestral compositions. Tickets for the performance are $10 adults; $8 seniors and students; and children under 10 are free. Tickets will be available at the door. In case inclement weather, the concert will be rescheduled to Sunday, Jan. 28. The Symphony and Chamber are under the direction of Keely Gould, who is beginning her fifth season leading the Skylands Youth Symphony. Gould is a graduate of the College of St. Rose and has earned a master’s degree in music education from the Central Connecticut State University. She has performed with the Orange County Music Educators Orchestra, The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra and numerous freelance projects. She also is a private violin instructor and a music educator in the Warwick Valley School District. Gould is a recent recipient of the distinguished music teacher award from Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. The Skylands Youth Symphony is made up of musicians from 9 to 18 years of age. The group is open to young musicians in the Sussex County, N.J., and Orange County region. To be eligible to join, one must have studied music for at least two years on an instrument and must be able to read music. An audition is required for all incoming musicians. In addition to performing concerts, the Youth Symphony has offered music theory classes, music workshops, symphony trips and scholarships. The Skylands Youth Symphony is a non-profit corporation organized in the spring of 1997. It is dedicated to providing “a forum for young musicians, primarily but not exclusively strings, to learn and perform a classical string orchestra repertoire in a supportive and musically competent environment. It is a haven for artistic expression for young musicians in and around the Sussex County area. Education, appreciation and performance are the basic goals.” Being a non-profit corporation, the Youth Symphony is totally dependent on tuition, donations, fund raising and grants. The Skylands Youth Symphony holds rehearsals at the Glen Meadow Middle School in Vernon Township, N.J., on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m..
