Which is the best type of vacuum? An upright or a canister?

There will probably be no end to The Great Vacuum Debate, but from my experience, a canister can handle more tasks than an upright with greater ease of operation. Cleaning tools are usually stored "on-board", you can detach the handle from the wand and the wand from the base with ease, and you don't have to push the entire vacuum with every motion. It's also easier to clean steps with a canister.
