Vernon - Robert Chorney, an American history teacher at Vernon High School, has been chosen by the N.J. State Daughters of the American Revolution as their “Outstanding Teacher of American History” for 2006. He will be honored at an awards banquet given by the state organization on Friday, April 28, at the Sheraton Edison Hotel Raritan Center in Edison. The banquet will be held in conjunction with the 114th annual state conference of the organization. Chorney had been selected by the Chinkchewunska chapter of the group as their “Outstanding American History Teacher” for 2006 in Sussex County. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies and psychology from Montclair State University, a Master of Arts degree in administration and supervision from the same university, and a Master of Arts degree in counseling and psychology from Seton Hall University. Since entering teaching in 1976, he has spent most of his career at Vernon High School. Because of his background in psychology, he also teaches college level psychology courses at the school. In addition, he teaches undergraduate psychology courses at Kean University and Passaic County College. Chorney continues to develop professionally by attending workshops, institutes and historical sites each summer. He received the Golden Apple award as “Outstanding Teacher” from Vernon High School in 2001 and the “Citizenship Education” teacher award from the Wallkill Valley Memorial Post 8441, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in 2004. He is a member of two honor socities, Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. Each year the Chinkchewunska chapter honors a Sussex County history teacher who has an incisive knowledge of American history, has shown excellence in teaching, maintains high academic standards, and fosters a spirit of patriotism and loyalty to our country and its constitutional government. Chorney will be entered into national DAR competitions. He was honored on April 22 at a luncheon held by the Chinkchewunska chapter at the Van Bunschooten Museum in Wantage.
