— The West Milford VFW Post 7198 has elected William Johnson its post commander. Johnson is a decorated multi-year Vietnam veteran from Hewitt.
"We are very proud of our membership and welcome war veterans from all conflicts to join our post," said Johnson. "Our members are all local residents. They are your friends, neighbors, husbands, fathers, wives, brothers, sisters, even grandfathers. We are dedicated to assuring all veterans are receiving the benefits and assistance they earned in defense of our American way of life."
Judging by the supportive and generous way that the residents of West Milford recently responded to the group's annual poppy event, "you obviously value their service and honor their sacrifice," he said.
"Our post intends to become more visible in, and supportive of, our community in the coming year," said Johnson. "We will support with manpower and funds any worthy organization or project brought to our membership for consideration. We will also sponsor local groups in need of support."
The post is also interested in recruiting qualified daughters, wives, mothers and grandmothers of veterans who may be interested in the Ladies Auxiliary, a national organization.
For information about any of the VFW or Ladies Auxiliary activities, contact Johnson at 973-749-6377 or Ed Nolan at 973-728-9070. Or, Johnson suggests, ask any veteran in town.
"They're easy to identify because they're proud of the unit they belong to and are usually wearing something to show their pride," he said, adding, "Hope to see all of you on Veterans Day."
