Newton - “Celebrating the Diversity of Leadership,” was the slogan for the Chair Academy’s 15th annual International Conference, held recently in Tucson, Ariz. Linda Nieman, executive director of advancement and planning at Sussex County Community College, was honored with the academy’s exemplary leadership award. Recipients of this award are nominated by their colleagues in recognition of their exemplary leadership; their demonstrated best leadership practices, and their commitment to their institutions, their departments, their teams, and the students they serve. Peter Drucker, legendary management consultant, once said “The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say I.’ And that’s not because they have trained themselves not to say I.’ They don’t think I.’ They think we’; they think team.’” The recipient of the academy’s exemplary leadership award exemplifies the importance of working in teams. Nieman and the other award winners will have their pictures displayed over the next year on the academy’s web page at mc.maricopa.edu/chair. They will also be published in the spring issue of the academy’s journal, Leadership. In addition to receiving the Leadership Award, Nieman was one of the selected presenters for the conference. She gave a talk titled, “How to Live Your Life Like You’ve Already Won the Lottery.” The talk is an uplifting, self-guided workshop that allows participants to examine what is important in their lives and discover what they want to change as well as what they wish to keep the same. The session is designed to allow people the time to look inward to find answers awaiting discovery.
