Floyd (“Curly”) H. Straway of Newton, N.J., died Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at home. He was 96.
Son of the late Charles and Julia ( Hammell) Straway, he was born in Newton on Nov. 27, 1924, Curly attended Newton High School, graduating in 1944. He was a U.S. Army veteran, proudly serving during World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.
Curly worked for the Newton Board of Education for many years prior to his retirement. He was also the owner and operator of the Newton Flower Shop for 27 years. During his youth, Curly worked for the former Wards flower Shop, as well as the former Darlington Mills in Newton.
Curly was a 60-year member of the Branchville American Legion Post 157, a 72-year member of the Harmony Lodge #8 F&AM of Andover, N.J., 60-year member of the Former Kittatinny Hook and Ladder Co. (Now Newton Fire Department), and a member of the First Baptist Church of Newton. He was also a member of the Prime Time Seniors in Newton and enjoyed playing cards and gardening.
He was predeceased by his eight siblings, Raymond, Rhinehart, Wayne, Paul, Willard, Frances, Fay, and Clara.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Vivian( Conklin) Straway; daughter, Victoria A. Brown of Otisville, N.Y.; son, Jay A. Straway (Denise) of Branchville, N.J.; grandchildren, Marc and Jacob; and granddaughter Jessica.
Visitation and funeral services were held July 31 at the First Baptist Church of Newton, with burial following in the Newton Cemetery with Military Honors.
