    John Paul Goebel Sr. died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012. He was 83.

    Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to James and Frances Goebel, he attended college and received his degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

    He was married to Patricia Kenny of New York City, daughter of legendary songwriter Nick Kenny. He had a long and accomplished career in the fashion industry under the brand of John Paul Goebel, Inc. His fashion business worked in men and boys sportswear design, color consulting for textiles, all fashion for men, women and children's wear and merchandising consultant for all fashion levels. He received many awards and accolades in fashion with his two biggest honors being named Designer of the Year on the cover of Time Magazine and also the first recipient of the New Directions Award for Excellence in Fashion. He enjoyed his time as the president of the alumni association at The Fashion Institute of Technology and was honored to be one of their distinguished commencement speakers.

    John retired in 1995 and spent the last two decades at his family's redwood cabin in West Milford.

    John is survived by two children, Nick K. Goebel of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Tara Goebel Murphy of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., daughter-in-law Lena Goebel of West Milford, sister Audrey Vion of Tenafly and seven grandchildren.

    He was predeceased by two children, Suzette Goebel Caggiano in 1995 and John Paul Goebel Jr., in 2007, and brothers Robert J. in 1997 and James Goebel.

    Visiting will be held at Richards Funeral Home, 1440 Union Valley Road, West Milford, on Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. A service will be held at 6:30 p.m. during visitation. Final disposition is private.
