Lt. Col. Norman F. Herget, USAF-Retired, passed away peacefully at The Health Center at Bloomingdale on Monday, April 28, 2014. He was 92 years young.
Norman was born on Jan. 27, 1922 in Union, to the late Ella (nee Packwood) and Frank Herget.
A B-17 bomber pilot during World War II, he served in the US Air Force and New Jersey Air National Guard for over 36 years with service in England, France, Japan, the Philippines and several bases in the United States before retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1979. Prior to and between his military assignments, he worked at the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark for over 32 years.
Norman has resided at 49 Ridgewood Road in Clifton for over 60 years and was a devoted and contributing member of the Allwood Community Church, having served as the church treasurer and sexton, as well as a deacon and elder for many years. He also was an avid motorcyclist who enjoyed traveling throughout the eastern United States while visiting friends and viewing many cultural and historic sites.
Norman was predeceased by his wife Doris M. Whitefleet in 1986 and his companion Elizabeth (Betty) Bostory-Potomic in 1996.
Norman is survived by his son, Craig and his wife Sue of Phoeniz, Ariz., his son Gordon of Clifton, and his special daughter Peggy Noble and her husband Mark of West Milford; his four grandchildren Robin, Kristie, Kristen and Leisha; his three great-grandchildren, Jack, Lola, and Dean; and his niece Jude Burinda.
A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, May 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery, 22-20 Maple Avenue, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410.
