Newton - Sussex County Community College will honor 43 outstanding students with induction into the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, Alpha Upsilon Pi Chapter, at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 7. The ceremony will be held in the Sussex Bank Theater at the college, located at One College Hill Rd. in Newton Guest speaker for the induction will be Mary Galeos, founder and president of the Sussex County Women’s Forum. Galeos is also an honor student at the college and will be among those inducted that evening. She will speak on Phi Theta Kappa’s international charity initiative, “Conquering Cancer.” A reception will be held following the induction ceremony. To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa membership, a student must complete a minimum of 18 hours of associate degree course work and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two-year college. Part-time and full-time students are eligible for membership. The chapter at Sussex County Community College has raised money for organizations like the American Cancer Society, First Books, and local charities, and will be receiving an award from the national organization for increased membership efforts in 2005. Phi Theta Kappa has been recognizing academic achievement in two-year colleges since 1918 and is recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official honor society for two-year colleges.
