Sparta - Gail Swain of Sparta was one of three women honored with Women as Agents of Change awards by the American Association of University Women of New Jersey on April 8 at the group’s annual convention in Monroe. Swain works throughout the year as president of People Help, a United Way agency, providing food, heat, and other necessities to Sussex County citizens, using donations and grants. She also is active on county boards, the League of Women Voters and the Sparta Presbyterian Church. The association is one of the few national groups dedicated to promoting equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change. It is a national and international organization with local branches throughout the state, and supports fellowships, grants and scholarships for higher education through its educational foundation, and legal help to teachers suing under Title IX through its legal advocacy fund. Members are graduates of two- or four-year higher education institutions. For information, call 973-328-1765 or 973-729-3904.
