TRENTON Police departments would have to mail or fax accident reports to individuals who request them under a Senate-approved bill advanced Thursday, June 1 by an Assembly committee. Motorists who want accident reports must currently get them in person at a police station, but the bill would allow police to mail or fax them if a person completes a request form. Bill sponsors contend forcing people to pick up reports creates a hardship for those who don’t live in a community where an accident happened. ``Picking up an accident report in person can be especially burdensome for the elderly or those individuals living far away from the location of the accident,’’ said Sen. Barbara Buono, a bill sponsor. ``In a world where fax machines are common, it doesn’t make sense not to have this option.’’ The bill passed the Senate in March.
