VERNON An anonymous phone caller alerted police that a suspect wanted for armed robbery was walking along a road in Vernon. The suspect, Robert P. Meola, 18, of Stockholm, was wanted in connection to a robbery on April 21 at the Dunkin Donuts in Newfoundland. During the robbery, a clerk and the suspect got into a scuffle and the suspect ran away before police arrived. The West Milford Police then released a composite drawing from the witnesses’ description and it was widely distributed. The caller had seen the sketch in a local paper and called when he saw Meola walking along Canistear Rd. Detective Brian Jernick of the Vernon Township Police arrested Meola on a complaint signed by Detective John Calabrese of the West Milford department. He was charged with one count each of armed robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. If convicted of these crimes, Meola faces up to 25 years incarceration in NJ State Prison and up to $115,000 in fines. Robert Meola is employed as a form fitter for Dunbar Concrete located in the Oak Ridge section of West Milford Township. The victim of the robbery and a witness both positively identified Meola as the suspect when shown photographs. Judge Corcoran of the West Milford Township Municipal Court set bail at $75,000.00 with no 10 percent option. Meola was transported to the Passaic County Jail when he was unable to post the amount. The armed robbery was investigated by Detective John Calabrese with assistance from Detective Robert Congleton of the West Milford Township Police Department. Also assisting were Detective Brian Jernick of the Vernon Township Police Department and Louis Trowbridge of the NJSP Composite Drawing Unit. In a press release, the West Milford Police thanked the members of the public who provided information leading to the arrest in this case.
