West Milford This year four teams of third and fourth grade students voluntarily read assigned books that were predetermined by a National Battle of the Books committee. Once completed, students had to write a summary for four of the books, including title, author, characters, setting, solution and main events. After many months of weekly meetings, the students were assembled and a “Battle Of The Books” took place. When the club began, 36 third and fourth graders participated. Eventually, ten students dropped out, leaving 26 students who share the love of reading and had the determination to succeed. On Thursday, May 24, the teams took turns answering questions. Since the answers were the titles of the books the students read, they had to give the correct title and the author for each book to earn points. The Master of Ceremonies was Marshall Hill Librarian Terry Sandford; the guest scorekeeper was Marshall Hill School Literary Specialist Karen E. Norman. Teams were rewarded with Gold reading medallions and trophy cups. A certificate of participation will be presented to each student at the Marshall Hill School Awards Assembly this month. Not only did the students show great knowledge of the books they read, they also proved they could cooperate as a group, exhibiting sportsmanship. It is the school’s hope that these student have created a precedent for their fellow students to follow, and that students will read during the upcoming summer months.
