MAHWAH A black bear appeared at the back nine holes of the Darlington Course on Friday morning, forcing the closure of the links for the rest of the day. Golfers were asked to leave the course for their safety after the bear surprised a ranger around 10:30 a.m. Police ran after the bear, trying to chase it into nearby mountains instead of a residential area. But the bear climbed up a tree near the 11th hole and sat there until mid-afternoon, when it ran into the Ramapo Mountains. Authorities said the bear was most likely looking for a spot to hibernate. The sighting came just days before the Monday start of New Jersey’s second bear hunt in more than 30 years.
