WEST MILFORD — The West Milford Health Department is sponsoring a Female Cancer screening to be held on Thursday, April 26, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the West Milford Health Department’s Nurses’ office located at 1480 Union Valley Road. Each woman will have a urinalysis, hemoglobin, hemocult testing and blood pressure and weight monitoring. The goal is to reduce the risk factors for cancer as well as other chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and anemia. The American Cancer Society has made dietary recommendations which should encourage women to change their consumption and behavior so that they can improve their health and prevent cancer. These dietary and behavioral changes will be stressed at the West Milford Female Cancer Screening Program. The focus is that women increase the variety of foods that they eat obtained from plants. By increasing fiber and grains we keep our intestines functioning at their optimal level which can reduce chances of colon cancer. Limiting red meat intake reduces cholesterol levels, which in turn puts one at less risk for breast and cervical cancer. Increasing physical activity, exercising at least 45 minutes three times a week, will help keep women in high spirits and trim. It will also enable them to maintain weight at a level that reduces risk factors for other illnesses. Women may call the West Milford Health Department at 973-728-2725 to schedule an appointment or further information. The fee for the screening is $35.
