Celebrating Boy Scout Sunday

WEST MILFORD — The West Milford Presbyterian Church celebrated Boy Scout Sunday on Feb. 12, 2012. The church recognized both current scouts and former scouts. It was a joyful celebration. For over 55 years the church has served as a host to Troop 44. But last year, Troop 44 had fallen into inactivity. That has changed and church members are delighted to have a small group that wanted to carry on with scouting. They meet each Monday evening in the Terhune Scout House.

This building was originally a one-room and later two-room school house, until Hillcrest School was built in 1942. The land for the school had been purchased from the Fitzgeralds, with the clause that if the school closed it would revert back to the heirs. Four years after the school was closed, the building was sold to West Milford Presbyterian Church by the heirs for $1 with the understanding that it would be used for the Boy Scouts and to support the programs of the youth of the church. All are happy to continue that tradition.
