    WEST MILFORD — West Milford Parks and Recreation will be offering a variety of different recreation programs this for children winter. Unless otherwise noted, programs are held at Hillcrest Community Center. Mommy and Me programs: Earth and Me - “Winter Wonderland,” a nature program for 3- and 4-year-olds; activities include songs, stories, crafts and exploring. Classes held at Westbrook Park, both inside and outside, Wednesdays, Feb. 1 to March 8, from 1:30 - 2:15. Cost: $50 per child. Costumes and Characters - a preschool drama class for 3 ½- to 5-year-olds; the program stimulates children’s imaginations as they explore real and imaginary worlds. Held on six Fridays, Jan. 27 - March 3, from 10 - 10:45. Cost: $45. per child. Imagine with Music - for children newborn to age 5; exposes your child to a variety of music, creative movement, singing, imagination and circle time with the use of instruments and fun. Instructor is Erika Crocco. Eight week session is offered on Wednesdays, from Jan. 18 through March 8. Two sessions: 9:45 - 10:30 and 12:30 - 1:15. Cost: $90 first child, $80 second sibling, $70 third sibling. Creative art for preschoolers: Art Together I - for children 2 ½ to 3, an introduction to colors and shapes using paints, playdough, crayons and other mediums. Six weeks on Thursdays, Jan. 26 - March 2 11 - 11:45, Cost: $50 per child. Art Together II - for children 3 - 4 years of age. Children will create beautiful works of art using different mediums, beginning writing skills will also be introduced. Mondays, Jan. 23 - March 6 (no class Feb. 20) 10:30 -11:15. Cost: $50 per child Classes for school age children: Kidsafe Karate - designed to enhance self esteem and self discipline. 10 week session, held on Mondays, Jan. 9 - March 20 (no class on Feb. 20); for students 5 - 14 years of age, New students ages 5 - 8: 3:45 - 4:25 or 4:30 - 5:10. Returning students ages 5 - 8 and new students 9 and up: 5:15 - 5:55. Yellow and orange belts: 6:00 - 6:40 and purple belts and up: 6:45 - 7:25. Cost: $70 per student. Chess Program - This six-week program will combine instruction in the game of chess with playing time. Sessions for beginners and intermediate students; players can move from one group to the other as they progress. Six week session on Tuesdays, Jan. 24 - Feb. 28, Beginners: 4 - 5 p.m. and Intermediates: 5 - 6 p.m. Cost: $40. Children’s Ceramics Classes - For children in first through sixth grades; Wednesdays, January 11 and/or 18, Feb. 8 and/or 15, and March 8 and/or 15. 4:30 - 6 p.m. Cost: $15 per class per child. Creative art classes: Fun with Fives - For children age 5, Enrich your child’s Pre-K and K experience; Held on Mondays, Jan. 23 - March 6 (no class Feb. 20). 4:15 - 5:15 p.m. Cost: $50 per child. Art through the Ages - for children 8 - 10 years of age. Enter an art time machine. Participants will become cave painters, create an icon, paint a fresco, make a Byzantine mosaic and make an Etyption statue. 6 weeks, Mondays, Jan. 23 - March 6 (no class Feb. 20), 5:15 - 6:15 p.m, Cost: $50 per child. Introduction to the Basics - for children 6 - 8 years of age, Participants will be taught shape, line, texture and color. They will learn to draw a portrait, paint a still life and make a seascape using pastels. Six weeks, Thursdays, Jan. 26 - Mar. 2, 4:15 - 5:15 pm. Cost: $50 per child. Discovering Great Artists - For children 8 - 10 years of age. Participants will practice the varied methods of masters from Monet to O’Keefe. Six weeks on Thursdays, from Jan. 26 - Mar. 2, 5:15 - 6:15 p.m. Cost: $50 per child. Violin Classes - for children in grades 1 - 6. At the end of the course the children will be able to pluck or bow a few simple songs. Limited rentals available. Wednesdays, Jan. 18 - March 8. Level 1: 4:30 - 5:15 and Level 2: 5:15 - 6 p.m. Cost: $110 per child. Violin Ensemble Class - provides students with the opportunity to play in a group and to develop ensemble techniques. Performances will include a spring concert. Class meets every other Thursday, beginning Jan. 26 through April 20 from 4:15 - 5:30 p.m. Cost: $115. Create a Character Acting Program: for children 6 - 8 and 9 - 12 years of age. This program is designed to help the child grow as a performer as well as an individual. The participants will learn the basics of theater, how to develop a character, how to make a character grow and even touch upon basic projection exercises. Eight week session on Mondays, Jan. 23 - Mar. 20 (no class Feb. 20), 6 - 8 years: 4: -5 p.m. and 9 - 12 years: 5 -6 p.m. Cost: $110 per child. Kids in the Kitchen: This course is designed to teach basic kitchen function and safety, maintaining a clean work area, preparing nutritious meals and enjoying what we’ve prepared. Two four-week sessions: Thursdays, Jan. 12, 19, 26 and Feb. 2 or Thursdays, Feb. 23 , March 2, 9 and 16. 5:15 - 6:30. Cost: $17.50 per child.
