Chilton seeking volunteers for friends of the elderly

    POMPTON PLAINS — Chilton Memorial Hospital is currently seeking volunteers for the Amicus Seniorium (Friend of the Elderly) Program. This program is designed to enhance individualized care by providing one-to-one companionship to hospitalized older adults. Volunteers, 18 and older, who have a sincere interest in interacting with older adults, a willingness to learn about dementia, and a time commitment of at least three hours per week are encouraged to apply. This Amicus Seniorium program’s goal is to improve the psychological health of the older adult patient who may be experiencing loneliness, fear, lack of opportunities for self-expression. It is especially targeted for those who are experiencing cognitive decline and memory loss. Volunteers will learn how to communicate with patients who have impairments associated with aging and dementia. Spirituality during illness will also be part of the training. The program will teach volunteers how to reminiscence with patients, use storytelling, music listening and a variety of activities to enhance the life of the older adult patient.
