WEST MILFORD Attempting to bring cheer with a little gift and a box full of supportive greeting cards, the sixth grade CCD class at Saint Joseph Church spearheaded a “Socks for Soldiers” drive recently. Under the direction of volunteer teacher, Theresa Gallagher, all of the CCD classes at the church had been busy creating cards to attach to each pair of socks. In all, the children collected over 250 pairs of socks, enough to fill five cartons. Gallagher, the students and parents gathered after the collections on Sunday and tied each pair of socks with a ribbon and attached a card. The greetings, varied in design, sent the children’s and parishioner’s prayers and messages of gratitude. Adding their address or e-mail address, several children expressed their desire to make contact with a service person in harm’s way and hoped to hear back from them so that they may have further communication. Jim Gallagher mailed the boxes off to the troops in time for delivery by Valentine’s Day. Following the directions given on “anysoldier.com,” the cartons were directed to particular service persons in the Air Force, Coast Guard, Army, Navy and Marines who will then handle the distribution to their units.
