Close call, but school budget voted down

WEST MILFORD — The school district budget election was so close, it took several extra days to determine the outcome. At first count, the budget passed by two votes, but after the 27 absentee ballots were added, the budget failed by three votes. That didn’t include the provisional votes. Provisional votes are paper ballots that are used when a voter goes to the polls but isn’t in the roll book. These votes must be verified and then counted. Six provisional ballots qualified, but they tied. The final count was 1374 to 1371 — a three-vote loss for the district. All three incumbents kept their seats and President Midge Touw and Vice President Bob Florian were both re-elected to their positions for another year.
