WEST MILFORD A Greenwood Lake man was charged last week with stealing electronics from the West Milford Shop Rite. He was caught when he returned to the scene of the crime to steal a second batch. On Nov. 27, Ptl. Susan Novakowski responded to the West Milford Shop-Rite on a reported theft of three televisions and four DVD players. Novakowski secured store surveillance videos which showed the suspect entering the store and leaving with the stolen items. The surveillance videos also showed that the suspect operated a 2005 Dodge pickup truck. The videos were turned over to Det. Congleton and with assistance from the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, the videos were enhanced and useable images were developed. These images of the suspect and his vehicle were distributed to police patrols and Shop-Rite security. Shortly before noon on Saturday, Dec. 2, Matthew Baker of Shop-Rite security recognized a person entering the store as the suspect who had taken the televisions and DVDs. Baker followed the suspect and detained him as he attempted to leave the store with another television and three more DVD players. Ptl. Novakowski and Ptl. Yarnall responded to the scene and placed the suspect, later identified as Harry R. Cortez under arrest. Cortez, age 53, of 60 East Shore Rd., Greenwood Lake, NY. was charged by Det. Congleton with two counts of shoplifting. Each count is third degree crime due to the value of the items stolen. If convicted of these charges, Cortez faces three to five years incarceration and $7,500 in fines for each count. Bail was set by Hon. Frank Santora at $25,000 with no 10 percent option. The bail was set after it was ascertained that Cortez has an extensive criminal history involving violence. It was also ascertained that there were active warrants for him out of Rahway, Mt. Holly and Paramus, N.J. Cortez was transported to Passaic County Jail after he was unable to raise the bail.
