Wayne — The fatal shooting of a knife-wielding man by police officers appears to have been justified, the Passaic County prosecutor said Thursday. Prosecutor James Avigliano said Wednesday night’s shooting death of Francis Sanabria, 43, appears to have been justified because the man came at officers with a large kitchen knife. Police were called to Sanabria’s home at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday after a report of a domestic dispute. When two police officers arrived, they found him holding a knife and arguing loudly in the driveway with his 15-year-old daughter, Avigliano said. ``They requested he drop the knife, but Mr. Sanabria came at them with the knife,’’ he said. ``The officers opened fire, and he was declared dead at the scene.’’ Detectives were continuing to interview witnesses and neighbors Thursday, but Avigliano said family members indicated Sanabria had suffered from some sort of mental or emotional illness recently, which might have precipitated the incident.
