West Milford —The Board of Education had kind words to say about how the district handled the snowy weather on Friday, March 16. Superintendent Glen Kamp commended the high school staff for successfully changing the date of the junior prom from the snow date to the Sunday afternoon immediately following. He said they took care of contacting the beauty salons, flower shops and restaurant booking in order to ensure a smooth transition for businesses and students. Members of the board said the staff went “above and beyond” for the students, who reportedly enjoyed the entire event. • John Aiello, a member of the library board, commented on the possibility of selling the portion of the Wallisch property that is co-owned with the board and splitting the profits 50/50. “We are the ones who should be speaking with the board of education,” he said. “It’s our investment, not the towns.” He said a letter has been sent to the board of education. However, no one on the board has yet to receive it. He said the library board has no interest in knocking down the Hillcrest School in order to build a new facility and doesn’t know anyone who would even consider the option. • A letter has been completed to advise parents of the adjustments to the school calendar for this year. The 2007-2008 calendar will be completed in April. • Kamp and Business Administrator Steven Cea have started budget presentations beginning with Macopin School and Bald Eagle village. “The seniors have great questions,” Kamp said. “It was great to have people who understand ask questions.” The budget will also be presented on the following dates: Monday, March 26, at Paradise Knolls at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, Apshawa at 7 p.m. Monday, April 2, Westbrook at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, Maple Road at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, Marshall Hill at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, Macopin at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 5, the high school at 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, Upper Greenwood Lake School at 7 p.m. The budget election is Tuesday, April 17, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. It will include the election of three board members for three-year terms. There are four candidates. They are incumbents Midge Touw, Robert Florian, Lynda Van Dyke and challenger Barbara Carter. • The board unanimously approved a resolution allowing the district to apply for a grant titled “The Governor’s Initiative: Enhancing and Expanding In-District Program Options for Students with Disabilities” that would provide $450,000 for the special education program beginning on July 1, 2007, extending to June 30, 2009. • The technology committee asked to have a presentation that was given to them offered to the board and the general public in order to see the growth and expansion of how technology is used in the school system. They said it would be best to record and then televise the presentation for those in the community who would like to see it. Further discussion about dates and time will be discussed in future meetings. • Kenneth Plokhoy, student representative to the board, said the high school has hosted several fundraisers to benefit Amanda McKinnon, a senior who was diagnosed with leukemia in June. He said they have raised approximately $3,000 so far. Another benefit concert is to take place on May 11.
