Fatal car crash on Canistear Road

    WEST MILFORD — Shortly before 4 a.m. on Monday, the West Milford Police Department responded to a phone call of a motor vehicle accident on Canistear Road. Initial investigation revealed that a Black 2002 Acura was being operated by Theodore T. Carhart (23) of Highland Lakes, NJ. The vehicle was traveling north on Canistear Rd. crested a hill and crossed over into the southbound lane. According to police, the car then went down an embankment and struck a tree. The first officer on the scene was P.O. Stephen Braikovich, who determined there was only one person in the vehicle. Carhart was pronounced dead at the scene. WMFAS #48, ALS 901, and Fire Co’s # 1,2,+ 4 were dispatched. The investigation caused the closure of one lane for several hours. The West Milford Collision Unit is currently investigating crash. No further details are available at this time.
