Feelings run along partisan lines

WEST MILFORD — A full six months before the election, partisan politics are heating up again in West Milford. At the town council meeting on Wednesday night, a couple of members of Parks and Recreation, along with Republican Councilman Carmen Scangarello (the board liaison to Parks and Rec) said they felt Democratic Councilman Bob Nolan should apologize for comments made at a previous meeting. They felt the comments were overly critical. Nolan said he didn’t really remember being particularly critical, but he and fellow Democratic Councilman James Warden said they were entitled to complain since any time they try to nominate anyone for a committee they are voted down and a Republican supporter gets appointed instead. A few weeks ago, Nolan and Warden tried to nominate Kathleen Caren to the Beautification Committee, and although there were no other nominees, the council majority vetoed the nomination. There are currently four Republicans and two Democrats on the council. Two seats currently held by Repulicans are up for election in November, so both parties are hoping to win the majority. In other business, the council agreed to hire a consultant to review the school budget which voters rejected last month. They want the consultant to recommend places they can trim expenses.
