WEST MILFORD — Firefighters from West Milford Fire Department Company 6 were on hand at several area schools providing instruction in fire safety during Fire Prevention Week. Firefighters Roy Sconfienza, Adrian Birdsall, Mike Nicholas, Joe Corcoran along with firefighter Darren Williams from Macopin Company 4, hosted fire safety programs at Hillcrest, Agape, Omni, Children’s Castle, PAL Pre-Schools and Maple Road School. Students were taught to check smoke detectors, how to escape a fire, never hide in a fire, stop drop roll, and 911 procedures. At each program, one of the firefighters put on all the fire gear including air packs so the students would see what he looks like when going into a burning structure to help. The students had a opportunity to try on some of the gear and sit inside the fire trucks. Fire Prevention Week is observed annually throughout the country during the week in which October 9th falls. October 9 is the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire.
