The color guard enters, the Pledge of Allegiance is recited and a reader begins with the words: “I am Old Glory; for more than nine score years I have been the banner of hope and freedom for generations ....” This, according to Joann Cazorla, will open the Girl Scout flag retirement ceremony she is organizing for August 4 at Westbrook Park in West Milford. The ceremony is open to the public. Cazorla, 14, a student at Saint Mary’s School in Pompton Lakes, has been a Scout since kindergarten. She has undertaken this community project as she strives for the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award for a Cadette Girl Scout. She is in Troop 688, sponsored by Saint Joseph Church. Hoping to collect old or damaged flags throughout the township and surrounding areas, Cazorla has asked anyone who has a flag that needs to be respectfully retired to look for the collection boxes around town. She has set them in Saint Joseph Church and School as well as Marshall Hill and Westbrook schools, the West Milford Post Office, at Fire Companies #2 and #4, and local businesses and restaurants.
